The Ms 5.4 San Salvador earthquake occurred in San Salvador, El Salvador, at 17:49 UTC (11:49 a.m., local time) on 10 October 1986. In addition to strong ground shaking the earthquake resulted in landslides in the San Salvador area. At least 1,200 people were killed, 200 people killed due to slope failures, 10000 injured, 200000 homeless. The estimate of direct economic losses for the earthquake was 685 million US dollars.
