On Saturday October 23rd, 2004, at 17:56, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Niigata prefecture Chuetsu region of Japan. In Kawaguchi town, seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale was recorded for the first time after the instrumental seismic intensity was adopted in Japan. Also, seismic intensity of 6-plus was recorded in Oguni town, Yamakoshi village, Ojiya city, and others. Series of aftershock scoring more than 6 in magnitutde hit the area for 4 times, and frequent aftershock activities continued.

Overall impact

Niigata-ken Chuetsu earthquake that hit middle north of Japan on October 23rd, 2004 destroyed homes of numbers of people. The number of killed and injured people amounted to around 5,000, and more than 100 thousand people at peak had to live in refuge. More than 160 thousand buildings were damaged. Joetsu-Shinkansen was derailed and not in service for a long time. Lifelines such as traffic, electricities, gas, water, and so on were cut off at pieces everywhere. Agriculture, forestry and farm-raising of carps that are chief industries in this mountainous area suffered a devastating damage. Among commerce and industry, many offices were forced to suspend their production activities. The amount of loss was greater than that of 1995 Kobe earthquake. People's lives and economical conditions in the area were seriously influenced.
