Event narrative

The Yogyakarta (Southern Java) earthquake occurred about 25 km SSW of Yogyakarta and about 440 km ESE of Jakarta at 5:54 AM local time on May 27, 2006. It had moment magnitude 6.3 and its focal depth was estimated by the USGS at 17 km.

The tectonics of Java are dominated by the subduction of the Australia plate north-northeastward beneath the Sunda plate with a relative velocity of about 6 cm/year. The Australia plate dips north-northeastward from the Java trench, attaining depths of 100-200 km beneath the island of Java, and depths of 600 km north of the island. The earthquake of 26 May 2006 (UTC) occurred at shallow depth in the overriding Sunda plate well above the dipping Australia plate.

It is not clear if there is a direct link between the May 26 earthquake and the eruption of the Merapi volcano (that was on-going at the time), situated around 40 km north of the earthquake's epicentral area.

Overall impact

In the USGS EXPO-CAT database it is estimated that during this earthquake 4,434,000 people were exposed to intensity VII or greater, of which 46% were in rural areas.

At least 5,778 people were killed, 38,568 were injured and as many as 600,000 people were displaced in the Bantul-Yogyakarta area. Most of the casualties occurred in Bantul district that lied in the epicentral region (4,143 killed and 12,026 injured).

Around 140,000 houses were destroyed and an additional 470,000 were damaged in the area, with the total loss estimated at approximately 3.14 billion US dollars.

Felt (IX) at Bantul and Klaten, (VIII) at Sleman and Yogyakarta, (V) at Surakarta, (IV) at Salatiga and Blitar and (II) at Surabaya. Felt in much of Java. Also felt at Denpasar, Bali.

Residents as far inland as Yogyakarta and Klaten fled inland in fear of a repeat of the 2004 tsunami, but such an event did not transpire as the earthquake was centred inland. The Solo-Yogya highway was jammed with people fleeing in panic.

Damage was not strictly a function of distance from the epicenter. Some areas of downtown Yogyakarta were seriously affected, while parts of Prambanan, which is over 10 km further from the epicenter, were severely hit. In particular, buildings alongside the Solo-Yogya road, including the ancient complex of Hindu temples, suffered substantial damage.

60 deaths due to outbreak of infectious diseases.

According to OCHA Press Release of July 13, 2006, 29 people died of tetanus due to infected wounds (out of a total of 79 reported cases of tetanus). The earthquake destroyed sanitation systems and contaminated many safe water sources, leaving the disaster zone increasingly dangerous for the spread of disease.
