Cariaco Venezuela 1997 (ERNAL)
On July 9th 1997 a strong earthquake of a magnitude Mw=6.9 with epicentre 70km from Cumana occurred. In the epicentral area near Cariaco (Sucre Province) and other towns in the coastal region the earthquake caused more than 70 deaths. In Cariaco the earthquake caused the complete and partial collapse of RC school buildings. In many villages nearly all dwelling house were damaged. Soil liquefaction and other secondary ground faillure effects could be observed at many places and causes damage to roads and wharves.
